Eyewitnesses and Palestinian media reported that the victim had been shot in the morning and his car set on fire. Cars from Israel can be recognized by their yellow license plates. Palestinian license plates are white. The town of Kalkilia is under the control of the Palestinian Authority. Israelis are generally prohibited from entering the city.

The previous day, Israeli security forces had killed two members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad wanted by Israel in the West Bank, according to Israeli and Palestinian reports. Israeli forces had fired on the men's car. Two other people were injured, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported. According to Palestinian reports, a 15-year-old boy had already been killed in clashes there on Thursday.

The situation in the West Bank has worsened significantly since the start of the Gaza war following the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. According to the Ministry of Health, the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli military operations, confrontations or their own attacks in the West Bank has recently risen to more than 530. Violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians also increased significantly during this period.
