The Italian flag is flying at half-mast in the square in front of it. Valentino's long-time partner and collaborator Giancarlo Giammetti was one of the first to enter the building. Many people joined the queue.
Valentino - whose full name was Valentino Garavani - died on Monday. The coffin will remain at the foundation until Thursday evening. The funeral service will take place on Friday in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome. The Italian was one of the most famous fashion designers for decades. He quickly made a name for himself in the fashion world with his elegant style. His trademarks were the letter V and the color red.
In 1960, he founded the Valentino fashion house together with Giammetti. Successful collections followed in the 1970s and 1980s. However, shortly before the turn of the millennium, Maison Valentino was also affected by the changes in the fashion industry. Large shares were sold. Valentino finally withdrew from the fashion business in 2007. He only designed clothes from time to time. Most recently, he lived in seclusion in Rome.
