"We are considering expanding our business in Germany to include the high-yield segment of express trains," the head of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) told Handelsblatt. According to the report, FS could deploy 50 trains. No further details were initially disclosed.
FS is already active in regional transport in Germany through its subsidiary group Netinera. This includes transport companies such as Ostdeutsche Eisenbahngesellschaft (Odeg) and Metronom, which mainly operates in northern Germany.
Deutsche Bahn, on the other hand, still has a near monopoly in long-distance transportation with a market share of around 95 percent. The best-known competitor in this segment is Flix with its green trains. Flix concentrates its services primarily on the main routes that are in high demand, such as between Berlin and Hamburg or between the capital and North Rhine-Westphalia.
