Federal Councillor Beat Jans fears that additional EU bureaucracy will make the repatriation of rejected asylum seekers more difficult. The Minister of Justice took part in a ministerial meeting on Schengen in Luxembourg on Tuesday.

At the meeting, the ministers of the Schengen states discussed a new return directive. They also discussed the mutual recognition of negative asylum decisions. The question arose as to whether this recognition should be mandatory or remain voluntary.

Jans advocated voluntary recognition, as he told Swiss journalists after the meeting. Too much was still unclear. He feared that it could slow down the deportation of rejected persons.

Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssel also feared more bureaucracy and was "very skeptical". The Dutch Minister for Migration and Asylum, David van Weel, said that mutual recognition was only good if it helped with returns, otherwise not.
