During the retrial of his historic sex crimes trial, ex-film producer Harvey Weinstein will be allowed to stay overnight in hospital.

According to US media reports, a judge in New York decided this after the 73-year-old's defense filed a motion to this effect. Weinstein suffers from numerous health problems.

A series of allegations of serious sexual assault against Weinstein in 2017 was a major catalyst for the global MeToo movement. The historic conviction for rape and sexual assault from 2020 was overturned last year due to procedural errors.

The trial has been reopened since Monday. Nine jurors were selected in the first week, and the remaining three jurors and six alternate jurors are to be found from next Monday.

The trial will then resume in Manhattan on the allegations of two women: The once-powerful movie mogul ("Pulp Fiction", "Gangs of New York") allegedly forced production assistant Mimi Haleyi to perform oral sex on him in 2006 and raped actress Jessica Mann in 2013. But the indictment added a third case: another woman accuses Weinstein of forcing her to perform sexual acts.

The trial could last five weeks. Weinstein has always denied any guilt. His lawyers emphasize that the sexual contact was consensual.
