Mysterious Kick-off to the Cortège of the Basel Fasnacht 2025
The Basel Carnival Cortège began on Monday afternoon in dry and mild weather. The cliques, floats and Guggenmusiken perform their motifs in this large parade. A total of 11,485 people in 442 units are registered for this year's Cortège.

After the morning prank, many carnival revellers perform in the afternoon according to the theme. At the Cortège, the various formations present their parade costumes with larvae, props and "Zeedeln" with dialect verses for the first time. Everything is designed and made to match the theme.
Popular subjects this year include the European Song Contest (ESC) in Basel, the 100th birthday of the artist Jean Tinguely, the canceled Totentanz event, the plight of the cantonal police and the Japanese beetle.
The Cortège enters its second round on Wednesday afternoon. Before that, however, the children's carnival and the free "Gässle" of the cliques, i.e. drumming and whistling without a predetermined route, will take place on Tuesday.
