The Franco-German armaments company KNDS has so far received 350 orders from five countries for the new Leopard 2 tank model. This was stated by a spokesperson for the company in response to an inquiry from the news agency DPA.

In addition to Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Lithuania and the Czech Republic have also ordered the further development of the tank, which was introduced in 1979. This will probably not be the end of the story. The German Bundeswehr has ordered 123 Leopard 2 A8s to date. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had already announced a procurement proposal for a further 75 units at the first public presentation of the tank.

According to KNDS Germany, talks are underway with other customers. Among other things, the new A8 model is equipped with a protection system from the Israeli manufacturer Rafael, which is designed to destroy incoming projectiles and drones before they hit the ground.

Billions in sales for the company

KNDS does not disclose order volumes or delivery times. However, it is clear that the orders add up to a considerable volume in the billions and will keep the company busy for several years.

A new Leopard tank costs tens of millions of euros, plus maintenance and repairs. The German government alone is planning to spend more than 3.4 billion euros on the 123 Leopard 2 A8s ordered to date.

According to the KNDS, 3300 of the Leopard 2s delivered over the past decades are still in operation in the armed forces of 23 countries.
