According to the Kremlin, the European Union is only harming itself with the decision to completely forego Russian gas.

Europe is making itself dependent on expensive energy from other sources and damaging the competitiveness of its economy, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow. "This will only accelerate the process of the European economy losing its leading role, which has been noticeable for several years," the state news agency Tass quoted him as saying.

Due to the Russian war against Ukraine, government representatives of the EU member states and the European Parliament have agreed to completely stop Russian gas imports into the EU by the end of 2027. Supplies via pipelines are then to be phased out for good. A ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) is to apply from January 2027 in line with the EU's 19th sanctions package.

Daily record for gas deliveries to China

For decades, natural gas deliveries to EU countries were a secure and problem-free source of income for Russia. The switch to China as a major customer is progressing more slowly than Moscow had imagined. The Russian gas company Gazprom reported a record daily supply of natural gas to China via the Sila Sibiri (Siberian Strength) pipeline on Tuesday. However, the agreed construction of a second line of this gas pipeline has been delayed due to a dispute over the purchase price for the natural gas.
