The Basel Tenants' Association has withdrawn its appeal against a new building project on Clarastrasse in Basel. It was able to reach an agreement with the owner and developer on an ecological construction method and a fair rent structure, as the association announced on Thursday.

The owners of the property want to create 13 apartments and space for a restaurant with their new building. That is twice as much living space as in the old building.

The tenants' association (MV) lodged an appeal against the project because it felt it violated the basic principles of housing protection, namely those of gentle renovation and ecological construction.

However, the MV has now given in, as it announced. It was able to reach an agreement with the owners "after intensive negotiations". An agreement emphasizes "the common will to reconcile social housing and particularly valuable ecological construction projects".

The investor has committed to purely cost-covering rents of 80 percent of the living space for at least five years, it says. In addition, the new building is to be constructed "according to the best ecological principles" and in particular in accordance with the SIA 2040 energy efficiency path.
