The railroad announced a further assessment of the situation for Saturday at 11.00 am.
The railroad company had already suspended rail services between Visp and Zermatt by midday on Friday. Both the road and the railroad line to Zermatt were closed due to the risk of flooding.
On Friday evening, the municipality of Zermatt called on the population to move into enclosed spaces. Those living near streams should seek higher floors. Zermatt's mayor Romy Biner-Hauser said on Swiss radio and television SRF's Tagesschau that vacation guests were safe. Those who are unable to arrive or depart will be given accommodation.
