The weekend's devastating storms caused considerable damage, particularly in the Misox region of Graubünden and in Valais.
Despite a calming of the flood situation, the second-highest danger level remains in place on Lake Constance, and the Rhine and several lakes are also still at risk of flooding.
According to MeteoNews, downpours and local showers could continue until Wednesday.
The devastating storms over the weekend have left their mark on Switzerland. The Misox in Graubünden and Valais were hit particularly hard, where the damage is enormous. A man was found dead in the canton of Graubünden, while another person is still missing.
The Moesa river burst its banks and swept away parts of the A13 highway, causing massive traffic problems. Despite a calming of the flood situation in many regions, the second-highest danger level remains in place on Lake Constance. The Rhine, from Lake Constance to the mouth of the Thur, is also still at considerable risk. According to the Federal Office for the Environment, Lake Walen, Lake Lucerne, Lake Brienz and Lake Geneva are at moderate risk of flooding.
Risk of thunderstorms remains
After a friendly Sunday and Monday morning with temperatures of up to 25 degrees in the north and 27 degrees in the south of Switzerland, the next weather front is already approaching. From Monday evening, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the southern regions, Valais and Ticino.
According to MeteoNews, showers and isolated thunderstorms are to be expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Contrary to a previous report by blue News, however, these are not severe thunderstorms. We apologize for the error.
The weather forecasts for the second half of the week are difficult due to the uncertain situation. Nevertheless, it is expected that thunderstorms could continue to occur at least occasionally, which means that the tense situation will continue.
Billions in damage
The exact amount of property damage caused by the storms cannot yet be quantified. However, according to the Keystone-SDA news agency, several responsible parties are assuming damage amounting to several million francs.
With the failure of the A13, Switzerland has lost an important traffic axis to the south. Traffic experts are warning of impending traffic chaos at weekends, especially in view of the restricted train traffic through the Gotthard following a freight train accident and the upcoming summer vacations.
Correction to the weather forecast: According to MeteoNews, isolated thunderstorms are expected in several regions on Monday evening, not heavy thunderstorms as announced in a previous blue News report. We apologize for the error.
