A lynx has been found dead on the side of a road in the region of La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Neuchâtel Jura. An autopsy of the animal revealed that it had been the victim of a gunshot.
The authorities have launched a criminal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the animal, as the canton of Neuchâtel announced on Wednesday. The lynx is a protected species in Switzerland.
The Neuchâtel police are appealing for information from possible witnesses. The carcass of the feline predator was discovered dead on the side of the road in the Mont-Sagne area on the night of March 3 to 4, they said. The police also asked the shooter to report to the Neuchâtel police in La Chaux-de-Fonds so that the circumstances of the shooting can be clarified.
The lynx was reintroduced to Switzerland in the early 1970s after being wiped out over 100 years ago. There are no exact figures on the current population. According to an estimate by the Kora Foundation for Predator Ecology and Wildlife Management, there were around 290 independent lynx living in Switzerland in 2021.
