A total of 20 people were taken into custody, according to the "Policía Nacional". In Spain alone, seven suspects were arrested in various provinces, it said. In addition, 13 people were arrested in countries such as the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Italy and Bulgaria.

A further 68 suspects in 28 countries are under investigation. Those arrested are said to have exchanged and disseminated material about the sexual abuse of children via instant messaging groups. During searches, investigators confiscated six computers, 21 cell phones and various storage and other electronic devices.

The investigation began in Spain with so-called cyber patrols, in which specialized police units tracked down chat groups that, according to the statement, were used exclusively to exchange images of abuse. Among those arrested are a teacher in Seville and a nurse from the province of Barcelona - both of whom have regular contact with minors. The nurse is also alleged to have paid for abusive images of Eastern European girls.
