The National Council has begun its deliberations on the popular initiative "For a committed Switzerland (Service citoyen initiative)". All parliamentary groups with the exception of the GLP expressed reservations about a citizens' service for all Swiss citizens.

The large chamber did not make a decision on Tuesday due to a lack of time. The popular initiative demands that Swiss citizens perform a service for the common good and the environment. This could either be service in the army or other equivalent and recognized militia service.

Patrick Hässig (GLP/ZH) said that the aim was to solve personnel problems in the army, civil defense and civilian service at the same time. This would help the environment and equality.

Opponents, on the other hand, criticized the excessive burden on the economy, even greater recruitment problems for the army, high costs and a great deal of bureaucracy. Less qualified workers could be pushed out of the labor market. There is a threat of wage dumping.

Opponents were also bothered by the fact that compulsory service for women is to be introduced, although equality has not yet been achieved in many areas. They argued that women already do a lot of unpaid work today. The initiative would create an unfair, even greater burden. Contrary to what the initiators claim, this would be detrimental to equality.

The debate will continue on Wednesday next week.
