A man has been beaten and burned to death by a crowd in Pakistan over a suspected Quran burning.
The crowd had taken the man from a police station on Thursday, where he had been taken for protection.
Attacks on people accused of blasphemy are not uncommon in Pakistan.
The accused man was a tourist from Punjab province in the east of the country and was staying at a hotel in the city when a mob accused him of burning Koranic pages, Khan said. The man was being questioned by police when the mob attacked the police station and scuffled with the officers, he said. The mob dragged the man away, beat him to death and burned his body. No arrests have been made in the case, Khan explained.
Attacks on people accused of blasphemy are not uncommon in Pakistan. International and national non-governmental organizations have said that blasphemy accusations are often used to intimidate religious minorities and settle personal scores.
Last month, a crowd in the eastern Pakistani province of Punjab attacked a Christian who was accused of desecrating pages of the Koran. The 72-year-old later died in hospital.
