Shortly after 2 a.m., residents of the municipality of Dorf ZH reported that they had been woken by a loud bang and could now see fire. The quickly arriving emergency services found a burning house with a large part of the attic blown away and the rest in flames, according to the Zurich cantonal police.
The 13 residents who were still in the house were immediately evacuated by the first responders. One of those affected toldBlickthat he first thought it was a lightning strike or a storm. Then someone shouted: "Get out, get out, you all have to get out quickly."
The mayor told Blick that he rushed to the scene immediately after the explosion. He did not yet know exactly what had happened. The residents are now "in a good place."
One person seriously injured
A 29-year-old man had to be flown to hospital by rescue helicopter with serious burn injuries. The wife told Blick that she did not know what had happened. "We just got out." Her husband was the seriously injured man, she said. "I don't know how he is, I haven't been able to see him yet."
The other twelve people were uninjured and were initially housed and cared for in the community hall.
Although the fire department quickly had the fire under control, the house is no longer habitable due to the extensive damage. All the residents were accommodated with relatives and friends.
The debris from the explosion also damaged neighboring houses and cars parked nearby. Initial estimates put the total damage at several hundred thousand francs.
The cause of the explosion is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Zurich cantonal police in cooperation with the responsible public prosecutor's office.
