After months of delay, the Facebook group Meta now wants to introduce its AI functions in the EU. As a first step, a chatbot will initially be available in six European languages.

Over time, the aim is to achieve the same range of functions as in the USA, Meta announced in a blog post. A time frame for this was not specified.

Meta AI was launched in the USA in 2023. In the European Union, the company suffered a setback last year: the responsible Irish data protection authority objected to the use of publicly accessible posts on Facebook and Instagram to train the AI.

Chatbots with artificial intelligence are fed huge amounts of information to train them. Meta argued at the time that the use of posts from the EU would better prepare the AI for the conditions in Europe.

The chat assistant is being rolled out free of charge across various of the Group's apps. Meta also includes the messaging services WhatsApp and Messenger. The launch in 41 European countries is set to begin this week.

In the USA, a so-called multimodal AI, which can process visual information and speech, is also available on the Group's connected glasses as part of Meta AI. The glasses frame has a camera - and users can ask the AI questions about what they are looking at.
