Tulum and neighboring Cancún are among the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico. Most recently, almost 200,000 German tourists visited the state of Quintana Roo every year. While the Riviera Maya has long been spared the widespread violence in Mexico, bloody clashes have been occurring in the vacation region for several years. A woman from Germany was killed in a shootout between two rival drug gangs in Tulum in 2021.
