The solar company Meyer Burger is making progress with the relocation of its core business to the USA. The production of solar modules in Arizona has started and progress has also been made with the planned solar cell production.

A strategic partnership with a US technology group is also being sought.

The new solar module factory in Arizona has met all the test standards required for the start of production, the company announced on Tuesday. The solar cells required for the ramp-up of module production will initially be produced at the German site in Thalheim. Later, a solar cell factory in Colorado Springs is to be put into operation.

The exact timetable for the start of solar cell production in the USA still depends on the financing, it said. The loan agreements are currently being negotiated with a major US bank and the aim is to conclude them by the middle of the third quarter. The company is also awaiting the disbursement of export financing from a major German bank.

Strategic partnership

Meyer Burger also announced that negotiations on a strategic partnership with a "leading US technology group" are well advanced. The commercial contract has been negotiated "until it is ready to be signed". Here too, Meyer Burger expects a binding agreement to be concluded in the third quarter.

The company has also secured another purchase agreement in the USA: The long-term contract with a new major customer has a total volume of 1.75 gigawatts, it says. The contract has a term of three years with an extension option and comes into force with the start of solar cell production in Colorado.
