New Year's Eve falls on a Wednesday this year, after which the stores will be closed in many places on New Year's Day. If you don't want to end up in a crowd, you need a plan - and you need to know which stores and locations are still open.

Many discount stores have special opening hours on New Year's Eve. The shopping offer is also limited on New Year's Day. blue News provides you with an overview.

On New Year's Eve, most Migros stores close earlier than usual - either at 4 or 5 pm. Migros emphasizes that it wants to give employees as much time as possible with their loved ones on public holidays. For this reason, care is also taken to ensure that employees can take turns on the various public holidays so that everyone has a day off.

Anyone who urgently needs to do some shopping on January 1 will have to rely on a Migros branch at special locations such as Zurich Airport: This is open every day, but the vast majority of branches remain closed on New Year's Day.

There is a little more leeway at Coop. Most supermarkets close on New Year's Eve between 4 and 6 p.m., depending on the region and location. They are not open again until January 2, and on New Year's Day, apart from places like Zurich Airport, the doors are closed.

At Volg, most stores close at 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve, with some branches not closing until 6 p.m. Many Spar locations will also remain open until 6 pm.

Many Volg and Spar stores will be closed on both January 1 and 2. However, it is worth taking a closer look at the local branch, especially in rural areas. For example, the Volg branch in Dallenwil NW is open on both days, as is the Spar branch in Glarus. As a rule, the decisive factor is how dependent the local population is on the respective offer.

Lidl usually closes at 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve, while some locations - depending on cantonal regulations - close as early as 4 p.m. Aldi Suisse also usually closes at 5 pm. At Denner, closing times vary between 4 and 6 p.m. depending on the location.
