Migros Online has been criticized for its working conditions, including its bonus system. The retailer's online store has now decided not to cut employees' bonuses in the event of illness.

If a Migros Online employee was absent due to illness or an accident at work, they previously had to expect to receive less or no bonus. However, the company has now decided that no more bonuses will be cut due to illness from March onwards, according to a statement issued by the Unia trade union on Friday.

The workforce at all logistics locations was informed of this this week, Unia added. A central demand of the employees has thus been implemented.

Employees at Migros Online's logistics centers had previously denounced numerous grievances. According to Unia, the complaints include "extreme pressure to perform, disregard for health regulations, non-transparent work organization and anti-union repression".

The employees consider the pay system to be particularly unfair, with a low basic wage and a bonus system that puts pressure on the workers. If teams work well, they receive extra money. Those who are absent have so far benefited less or not at all from the bonus.

Migros examines possible fixed wage

Migros confirms that the subsidiary has decided, in collaboration with the staff committees, to take the first step of abolishing these sick pay cuts with effect from March. "There will no longer be any bonus deductions," said Migros spokeswoman Prisca Huguenin-dit-Lenoir at the request of AWP.

In a second step, negotiations on the bonus system and a possible fixed salary would be held with the staff committees. Migros Online has promised an update for April.

Migros firmly rejects the accusation of an anti-union stance. Migros Online employees are expressly permitted to speak to or join the trade union of their choice at any time. "We would like to emphasize that the majority of employees support the path with the internal staff committee," said Huguenin-dit-Lenoir.
