Tod's is accused of having "facilitated" the exploitation, according to documents published by the public prosecutor's office on Thursday. The company is alleged to have failed to adequately monitor the activities of its subcontractors.
The prosecution's application states: "The police checks have brought to light a phenomenon in which two worlds - only seemingly far apart - luxury on the one hand and Chinese workshops on the other, unite for a common goal: to reduce costs and maximize profits - by circumventing criminal and labour laws."
Tod's rejects allegations
Tod's rejected the allegations in a statement. "The company complies with all applicable regulations, including those governing the labor market. Our inspectors carry out regular checks in the workshops that we select and commission," it said.
For Tod's, "the quality of the products and the quality of the working environment for our employees are indispensable values". "If we had been contacted at the right time - many months ago - we would have been able to provide all the necessary explanations and clearly explain our production organization, which has always complied with the rules and the law."
The Milan public prosecutor's office has been conducting investigations into the exploitation of workers for several years. Major international corporations and leading fashion brands such as Loro Piana, Valentino, Dior and Armani have also been targeted.
