Last year, the number of milk-producing farms fell by 2.5% to around 16,650, according to a press release issued by the Federal Office for Agriculture on Monday. Over the last 25 years, the number of dairy farms has even fallen by around half. However, the individual farms have become larger.
In total, almost 3.7 million tons of milk were produced in 2024, roughly the same as in previous years and around 100,000 tons more than at the start of the millennium. There were 527,400 dairy cows in the country, around 4900 fewer than in the previous year.
Producers received less money for their milk last year than in the previous year. The producer price was only higher for organic milk. Nevertheless, consumers had to pay more for a number of dairy products in the stores.
