The Asian low-cost online retailer Shein has been fined 40 million euros in France for deceiving consumers with discounts. This was announced by the Paris competition and anti-fraud authority DGCCRF.

The authority accuses the shopping portal of misleading customers during promotional campaigns with regard to allegedly reduced prices. According to its statement, the DGCCRF investigated thousands of allegedly discounted products on the French Shein website between October 1, 2022 and August 31, 2023.

According to the report, the portal sometimes increased certain prices before a discount campaign or did not take previous discounts into account. According to the DGCCRF, this resulted in 57% of the items reviewed not offering any discounts at all. Almost one in five discounts were lower than advertised. According to the report, 11 percent of the cases even offered price increases.

The French authority also criticized the fact that the company was unable to substantiate environmental claims on its website - such as the statement that it had reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent.

A company spokesperson told Deutsche Presse-Agentur that the French authority had already informed the company in March 2024 and that it had immediately initiated "corrective measures". These were completed shortly afterwards. "This means that all the problems identified were addressed more than a year ago."
