The explosion of a car in a busy district of New Delhi has claimed the lives of at least eight people and put the authorities in the Indian capital on alert. The cause of the explosion near the historic Red Fort palace complex was initially unclear. By late evening (local time), eight fatalities had been confirmed, said Home Minister Amit Shah, citing hospital staff. Numerous people had been injured. The Indian broadcaster NDTV had previously spoken of 10 to 13 dead.

It was too early to say whether it was a terrorist attack, police chief Satish Golcha told journalists. "All possibilities are being investigated." Among others, a special police unit for combating terrorism was involved in the investigation.
Explosion near tourist attractions
According to reports, the explosion occurred not far from an entrance to the Lal Quila (Red Fort) metro station, which leads directly to the much-visited old market district of Chandni Chowk. The massive palace complex, which was closed on Monday, is located on the other side of the road. Both the market and the complex are a well-known tourist attraction in Delhi. The roads around the affected area have been closed.
The vehicle was a small car, NDTV reported. The car had come to a halt in front of a set of traffic lights when the explosion occurred. The detonation did not create a crater in the road, nor had any shrapnel been found, according to initial investigations.
"Large fireball"
According to the reports, the explosion caused a fire. Numerous other vehicles were damaged. "I saw a big fireball from the terrace of my house," NDTV quoted an eyewitness as saying. The explosion shook the windows of the building.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sympathy with the families of the victims. He had spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah and other officials about the situation, Modi wrote on the X platform. The identity of the victims was initially unknown.
