This is the most extensive modernization in the history of SBB's long-distance services. Numerous technical improvements will be made, such as to the bogies and engines, as well as in the area of customer comfort, as the railroad company writes in a press release.

SBB put the 44 ICN trains, nicknamed the "trains of Expo 02", into service in 2001. After covering over eight million kilometers each, they have now reached the halfway point of their life cycle and are being given a comprehensive modernization programme. According to SBB, this will enable them to run for another 20 years.

The improvements and modernizations include a new lighting concept, new upholstery, new seat covers, new carpets and new side tables with integrated sockets. The dining cars will receive new tables and seats.

The family area will also be redesigned. SBB is providing the business area with new tables. The toilets are also getting a makeover. The railroads are improving cell phone reception by installing laser-perforated windows. The company is also taking measures to save energy.

Seat reservations are displayed electronically and the customer information system is overhauled. In addition, all carriages are given a new exterior paint job.

According to SBB, the prototype of the first fully renovated ICN is due to enter commercial service this year following a series of tests. SBB says it is investing more than CHF 500 million in the extensive refurbishment program.
