After two years of construction, Barryland in Martigny VS reopened its doors to visitors on Thursday. The most important new feature is the theme park dedicated to St. Bernard dogs. The visitor capacity has also been doubled.
"The work was completed on schedule and according to plan. We had given the public a date for the end of June... Well, now the time has come," Jean-Maurice Tornay, President of Fondation Barry, told the media on Thursday.
The foundation has replaced the old museum with a larger, more modern and more interactive space. The restaurant has also been extended. 14 new jobs have been created. With the redesign, the management of Barryland hopes to double the number of visitors from the current 70,000 to 80,000 people per year.
Shaped like a dog's paw
The cost of the extension amounted to 24 million francs. The new park was financed with own funds and donations.
The area, designed in the shape of a dog's paw, extends over 2,400 square meters and fits into a 22,000 square meter park with trees. The Fondation Barry emphasizes that this offers the St. Bernards an ideal setting for their well-being.
In five themed areas, visitors can immerse themselves in the history and myths surrounding St. Bernards and discover their characteristics at the same time. The dogs can be observed.
The Fondation Barry took over the kennel with the St. Bernard dogs from the canons of the Great St. Bernard in 2005.
