The court in the southern Turkish city of Kahramanmaras found the man guilty of negligent homicide and injuring several people, as reported by the DHA news agency. It also issued an arrest warrant. No details were initially known.
In two devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023, 96 people died in a building that the man was responsible for constructing.
According to DHA, the relatives demanded that officials who issued permits for the construction should also be held accountable.
More than 60,000 people died in the quakes in Turkey and neighboring Syria. Critics had accused the Turkish government of failing to provide earthquake relief, especially in the beginning, and of tolerating construction defects.
