After a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in the western Turkish province of Balikesir, numerous aftershocks have shaken the region. The disaster control authority Afad announced that it had registered 237 aftershocks, ten of which had a magnitude of at least 4.0. The epicenters were located in the Sindirgi district. People spent the night outdoors or in their cars out of fear, the media reported.

The main quake on Sunday evening was felt as far away as the cities of Istanbul and Izmir, more than 200 kilometers away. According to official figures, one person was killed and 29 others were injured. Four are still being treated in hospital. According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, a total of 16 houses collapsed in the quake. The rescue work has now been completed.
There are numerous faults in Turkey. The metropolis of Istanbul in particular is at high risk of earthquakes. It was only in April that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook Istanbul.
On February 6, 2023, devastating quakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in the south-eastern Turkish province of Hatay. According to government figures, more than 53,000 people lost their lives in Turkey alone. There were also thousands of deaths in neighboring Syria.
