The military government of the Southeast Asian country said in a statement that 2,056 people had died. In addition, more than 3,900 people have been injured. More than 270 people are missing.

According to experts, the actual number of victims is likely to be far higher. The situation in the civil war country is considered unclear. Friday's quake, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, caused major damage to the infrastructure. The epicenter was near the second-largest city of Mandalay in the center of the former Burma. Since then, there have also been repeated minor aftershocks.
