So far, 31 bodies have been found under the rubble, while three people have died of their injuries in hospital, the police chief of the affected district of Sangareddy in the state of Telangana told the Indian news agency PTI. By Monday evening (local time), Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha had said at least twelve people had died.
Search for victims continues
Numerous workers were also injured in the accident in an industrial area near the megacity of Hyderabad. According to Rajanarsimha, more than 90 people were in the plant. A three-storey building collapsed on the site.
According to reports in the Indian media, the explosion triggered another detonation and a major fire. On Tuesday, a search continued under the rubble for possible trapped workers.
The cause of the accident was initially unclear. It was suspected that a chemical reactor had exploded, reported the local newspaper "Deccan Chronicle". Workers from the Sigachi company, which manufactures pharmaceutical and chemical products among other things, were affected.
As the newspaper "Telangana Today" reported, the accident is probably the largest industrial accident in the state's history.
