Police representative Fernando Albornoz stated at a press conference that it was unclear why the Molotov cocktails had detonated. The explosion caused burns to a large number of students who were in a toilet at the school, Albornoz said.
"The situation is a tragedy," said Interior Minister Carolina Tohá. "Molotov cocktails are weapons", she continued, adding that they were "not an acceptable means of protest".
The Inba boarding school is one of the oldest high schools in Santiago. In recent years, Inba students have often organized demonstrations for more resources for public education, which have ended in clashes with the police.
