Cities and municipalities do not want any further restrictions against the introduction of 30 km/h zones in road traffic by the federal government and cantons. The existing division of responsibilities between the levels of government should be respected.

The open letter to Transport Minister Albert Rösti and the cantonal building directors was signed by 600 towns and municipalities across all party lines. This was announced jointly by the Swiss Association of Communes and the Swiss Association of Cities on Thursday.
In their letter, they refer to a motion aimed at making it more difficult to implement a 30 km/h speed limit on so-called traffic-oriented roads. Similar motions have been submitted in various cantons.
Additional federal or cantonal regulations lead to unnecessary restrictions, delays and legal uncertainties, they continued. They would therefore prevent effective and necessary measures for road safety and noise protection.
Municipalities and cities are best placed to assess local needs and implement appropriate solutions. Above all, the two municipal associations reject the rigid obligation to install low-noise surfaces, as envisaged in the federal government's current implementation proposal.
The Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) does not share this opinion. The Road Traffic Act stipulates that the Federal Council is responsible for speed regulations on all roads. Rösti is therefore acting in accordance with the law and current practice. According to the TCS, the cities still have room for maneuver; the hierarchy of the road network must simply be taken into account.
