Tesla boss Elon Musk has announced the launch of a robotaxi service from the electric car manufacturer in the US city of Austin. By the end of the year, the introduction in California and several other regions in the USA is also planned, he said.

The whole of North America and "most countries" internationally would then follow next year, he announced after presenting the latest quarterly figures.
Musk has long promised that all Teslas will drive autonomously. So far, however, even the advanced version of Tesla's "Autopilot" system requires human supervision. Meanwhile, Google's sister company Waymo offers robotaxi services without humans at the wheel in several US cities.
Unlike much of the industry, Musk insists that autonomous driving is only possible with cameras - without the more expensive laser radars that Waymo, among others, relies on. If this works, Tesla would have an enormous cost advantage. However, experts fear that safety would be compromised.
