Despite an announced ceasefire, clashes between the military leadership and resistance groups continue in the earthquake region in Myanmar.

According to reports from residents, the junta in the Southeast Asian civil war country launched several military operations in the Sagaing region affected by the quake during the night. On Wednesday, the military leadership had announced a three-week ceasefire. The move was intended to facilitate the rescue and reconstruction work.

The junta has ruled the former Burma with brutal severity since a coup in 2021. The generals are at war with their own population in the multi-ethnic state and reportedly continued to carry out air strikes on resistance groups after the earthquake six days ago, in which dozens died.

The 7.7-magnitude quake on Friday mainly shook the second-largest city of Mandalay, the Sagaing region and the capital Naypyidaw. It was still felt more than 1,000 kilometers away in Bangkok. On Wednesday, the death toll in the Southeast Asian country was reported on state television as 3,003. More than 4,500 people were injured, it said.
