There were fears that people could get lost while searching for it.
Authorities in the US state of Nevada have removed a mysterious shiny monolith from a remote mountain range near Las Vegas. The discovery of the object at the weekend and its swift removal brought back memories of similar incidents during the coronavirus pandemic, when such objects appeared around the world. It was not initially known how the rectangular prism with a reflective surface ended up on the mountaintop.
It was also unclear who was responsible for installing the almost two-meter-high object, Las Vegas police explained in a series of posts on X on Friday. The stele-like structure was quickly removed as it was illegally installed on federal land managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. There were also concerns about public safety and the site, a wildlife refuge.
MYSTERIOUS MONOLITH UPDATE:
A lot of you have asked about the mysterious monolith that was recently spotted north of Las Vegas. Yesterday afternoon, we assisted with the removal of the item due to public safety and environmental concerns. pic.twitter.com/4NrR9FDo4T
Law enforcement personnel had spotted the object over the weekend near Gass Peak, part of the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge where bighorn sheep and desert tortoises roam.
There have been many monolith sightings
In November 2020, a similar metal monolith was found deep in the Mars-like landscape of Utah's red rock desert. This was followed by similar sightings in Romania, California and on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. They all disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.
The Utah structure, believed to be the first in the series, was carved into the rock in such a remote area that authorities did not immediately disclose its location for fear that people might get lost looking for it. For the same reason, the most recent monolith was removed Thursday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.
