It is the famous namesake of the hot dog eating contest on Coney Island: sausage specialist Nathan's Famous is changing hands for 450 million dollars.

The buyer is the meat company Smithfield Foods, which has held the license for the production and sale of Nathan's products in the USA and Canada since 2014. This license was limited until 2032.
According to the company's history, Nathan Handwerker opened his first hot dog stand at the Coney Island amusement park in 1916. The family handed over control to investors in the 1980s. The traditional hot dog eating contest takes place on U.S. Independence Day on July 4 under large Nathan's logos at the company's first location. The current record holder Joey Chestnut swallowed 76 hotdogs within ten minutes in 2021.
