Several hundred people gathered on the Rütli in the canton of Uri at midday on Friday to celebrate the Swiss Confederation. In sunny weather, they welcomed the keynote speaker, President of the Swiss Confederation Karin Keller-Sutter, with warm applause.
The Finance Minister is not only the center of attention at the ceremony because of her speech. On Thursday evening, she had to announce that Switzerland had been unable to reach an agreement with the USA on customs duties.
Switzerland was thus caught up in the politics of the day on its public holiday. However, for Anders Stokholm, President of the Swiss Society for the Common Good (SGG), the current celebration on the Rütli has not lost any of its significance as a result. After all, the covenant was concluded against arbitrary rule, he told the Keystone-SDA news agency in the run-up to the event.
The motto of the Rütli celebrations is "Harmony and Diversity". It is intended to illustrate that people can work together constructively and enrichingly despite their differences, according to the SGG.
