From next year, self-generated electricity can be marketed in neighborhoods or municipalities via the public grid. On Wednesday, the Federal Council brought the necessary provisions for local electricity communities into force on January 1, 2026.

The Electricity Supply Ordinance regulates how much generation capacity must be contributed to the community and at which grid levels the participants may be connected. According to the Federal Council's announcement, the electricity must be self-generated and this electricity will benefit from a reduced grid usage tariff.
Changes to the Energy Ordinance will also apply from 2026. Electricity distribution grid operators will now have to purchase electricity from production plants and be paid appropriately for it. A minimum remuneration will be introduced for electricity from small systems with a capacity of up to 150 kilowatts. The aim of this is to protect producers from short-term price fluctuations.
