Dutch investigators have discovered around 3600 kilograms of cocaine in the port of Vlissingen. The drugs had a retail value of around 270 million euros, the public prosecutor's office announced on Thursday. According to the information provided, it was the largest quantity of cocaine seized this year in the port in the southwest of the country.

The drugs were discovered during an ordinary inspection. The cocaine was hidden between a load of bananas from Ecuador bound for Germany. A 27-year-old suspect was arrested.

Almost 500 kilograms of cocaine with a retail value of around 37 million euros had already been found in the port in May. This shipment was also reportedly hidden in a cargo of bananas from Ecuador.

Investigators have been observing since last year that more cocaine is being smuggled to Europe via smaller ports such as Vlissingen. One reason for this could be the stricter controls and security measures at the port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe.
