A new cell phone app from the University of Bern aims to make it easier for the people of Bern to deal with heatwaves. The tool called "Bernometer" provides individual temperature forecasts and heat warnings.
This information can be called up for all locations in the city via a digital city map, as the University of Bern wrote in a press release on Friday. At temperatures of over 30 degrees during the day and 20 degrees at night, the Bernometer sounds the alarm and provides tips on what to do. The information can be accessed via a mobile app and website.
The tool is based on findings from the measurement campaigns of the "Urban Climate Bern" research project, according to the press release. According to the findings, the heat is distributed very differently in the city of Bern: In the most polluted neighborhoods in the city center, night-time temperatures are on average three to four degrees higher than outside the city. The old town and the Breitenrain and Mattenhof districts are considered heat hotspots.
