Almost a year after the Kleiner Nesthorn glacier collapsed, Blatten in the Valais Lötschental valley is once again on alert. This time, the Oigschtchummun glacier is threatening to partially break off.

The Oigschtchummun glacier lies south of the Fafleralp below the Breitlauijoch. Its glacier front is located at an altitude of around 2600 meters. In recent months, isolated rockfalls have been observed there. It is now being monitored more closely, as the municipality of Blatten has been reporting on its website since Monday.

At present, it seems more likely that the increase in rockfall on both the Oigschtchummun glacier and the Birch glacier is the main reason for the advance of the glacier front, the Valais Natural Hazards Service (DNAGE) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday.

The DNAGE is confident: the initial findings do not indicate that the glacier below is likely to melt.
