The protection of bees and other pollinating insects is to be enshrined in the constitution. A committee of beekeepers, nature lovers and members of parliament from several parties has launched the collection of signatures for the bee initiative.
The popular initiative "For securing the pollination of cultivated and wild plants by insects (bee initiative)" was published in the Federal Gazette on Tuesday. The 100,000 valid signatures required for the initiative to come into effect must be collected by November 19, 2027.
The initiative requires the federal government and cantons to ensure the pollination of cultivated and wild plants by insects and to deploy the necessary resources for this purpose. The Confederation must set guidelines for the appropriate promotion of the populations and diversity of bees and other native pollinating insects.
The Confederation must support the cantons, municipalities and businesses in their efforts to benefit insects. We are talking about incentives for the provision, maintenance and improvement of near-natural habitats. The text of the initiative does not contain any specific guidelines on how this should be done.
