Demand for new all-electric vehicles in Switzerland fell in 2024 after several boom years. Their market share of new passenger car registrations fell by 1.7 percentage points to 19.0% within a year.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the industry sees possible reasons for the decline in pure "electric cars" in the still narrow range of electric cars on offer at lower prices and in the partial lack of home charging options for tenants. Another reason could be the extension of the tax on electric cars at the beginning of 2024.

Overall, the number of new motor vehicle registrations in 2024 fell by 2.9% compared to the previous year, as the FSO reported on Thursday. The decline in passenger cars amounted to 4.1 percent.

New registrations of goods vehicles were slightly higher overall than in the previous year. However, they were even more affected by the decline in the electric segment than passenger cars. Their share fell from 12.2 to 8.6 percent.
