At the same time, automation will be further increased at the site in the canton of Aargau, Novartis announced on Tuesday. Overall, the plans could result in a reduction of around 550 permanent positions by the end of 2027.

In order to maintain competitive production in Switzerland, Novartis must focus on investing in innovative manufacturing technologies and a high degree of automation, according to the communiqué.

All steps are subject to consultation; the company is providing offers of support and an extended social plan.

At the same time, Novartis is investing 80 million dollars in the expansion of the production of siRNA, i.e. very small RNA molecules, at its Schweizerhalle BL site. The Group will create around 80 new full-time positions here by the end of 2028.
