The extreme heat has already caused 155 deaths in Mexico since March. More than 2,500 people had also been treated for heat stroke, dehydration or sunburn by mid-June, as the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday evening (local time).

In the past three months, the Latin American country has experienced three heatwaves with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40 degrees. Animals were also affected by the heat. According to the Ministry of the Environment, at least 220 howler monkeys have died so far due to the high temperatures in the south-east of the country. They fell dead from the trees or died of dehydration.

According to a study by the scientific initiative World Weather Attribution, man-made climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of heatwaves in Mexico and its neighboring countries. Persistently high temperatures have also been measured in the southwest of the USA and in the north of Central America in recent weeks. The drought has also affected the water and electricity supply.
