Two days after the serious train accident in southern Spain that killed at least 42 people, there has been another fatal rail accident in the north-east of the country. A train driver was killed in Catalonia, according to the regional rescue service. At least 37 other people were injured, five of them seriously.

The accident occurred in the evening near the town of Gelida, around 30 kilometers west of Barcelona. 20 ambulances and dozens of paramedics and helpers were deployed at the scene of the accident near the town of Gelida, east of Barcelona, Catalonia's civil defense announced on X. Images from online media showed the destroyed front end of the train.

According to the report, a retaining wall had fallen onto the tracks during a heavy storm with heavy rain and also hit the R4 train on the Rodalies local transport network. Especially in the evening hours, these trains are full on weekdays and many passengers have to travel standing up.

Rail services in Catalonia suspended

Following the accident, local and regional train services in Catalonia remain suspended for the time being. The state infrastructure manager Adif announced that operations on the Rodalies de Catalunya network would remain suspended until the infrastructure damaged by the storm had been fully inspected.

Earlier, another Rodalies local train on the R2 line had derailed further north near the town of Blanes due to a landslide. The train lost an axle, but no injuries were reported.

More deaths due to storms

The authorities had issued a red alert in some areas of Catalonia due to the strong storm "Harry" with wind speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall. Warnings were also issued against approaching harbor piers and beaches due to meter-high waves.

Meanwhile, rescue workers were able to find a man's car, which had been swept away by masses of water in a normally dry river course, a riera, near the village of Palau-Sator. A dead man was found in the car, who is presumed to be the missing man, the fire department announced.
