The Atlantic low "Kristin" hit the coast of the vacation destination in the early morning with wind speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour. The authorities called on people to stay at home for the time being, according to the state news agency Lusa.

Fallen trees and rivers overflowing their banks after heavy rainfall, as well as snow above around 400 meters, paralyzed railroads and made roads impassable. Schools had to remain closed and at times up to one million households were without power, as the state TV station RTP reported.

The storm has since moved eastwards towards Spain. The authorities there also warned of storms, high waves on the coasts and snow even at lower altitudes.
