Due to a weak autumn revival on the labor market, the number of unemployed people in Germany fell only slightly by 66,000 to 2.806 million in September compared to the previous month. This brings the three-million mark into view for the winter.

According to the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg, there are currently 179,000 more unemployed people than in the previous year. The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 points to 6.0 percent in September compared to August.

"Unemployment and underemployment did fall in September, but significantly less than usual this month. The start of the autumn revival on the labor market is therefore sluggish this year," said Andrea Nahles, Managing Director of the Federal Employment Agency, in Nuremberg.

Demand for workers also continued to fall. According to the Federal Agency, 696,000 vacancies were still registered in September. That is 65,000 fewer than a year ago.

Highest unemployment in Bremen

In a comparison of the federal states, unemployment is highest in the city state of Bremen with a rate of 11.1 percent, followed by Berlin with 9.8 percent. Bavaria has the lowest unemployment rate in a state comparison at 3.8%. The states of Thuringia and Brandenburg are the eastern German states with the lowest rate at 6.1% each.

Short-time work could pick up again slightly. Between September 1 and 23, 65,000 people were registered for short-time work. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous month.
