Only one in five people in Switzerland attend a church service at Easter or abstain from meat or alcohol on at least one traditional fasting day. Around a quarter of respondents see Easter primarily as a family celebration, a survey shows.

Around six out of ten people in Switzerland celebrate Easter, according to a survey conducted by the digital market and opinion research institute Marketagent Switzerland on Good Friday.

The most popular Easter custom in Switzerland is the chocolate bunny, but chocolate eggs and colorful Easter eggs are also popular, it added. Gifts are also given at Easter. An average of CHF 20 per person is spent on them.

Just over a quarter use the Easter vacations to go on vacation. In French-speaking Switzerland, it is even a third, wrote Marketagent Switzerland. In terms of travel destinations, the trend is clearly towards sun and warmth, at 84 percent. Only 16 percent want to go skiing at Easter.

As part of the survey, 1020 people between the ages of 14 and 75 from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland were questioned. The interviews took place from the end of March to the beginning of April.
